Keep Your Home Safe in Summer

Summer is in full swing here in Indiana and homeowners are taking full advantage of the beautiful Midwestern weather. Without a doubt, summer is when most homeowners take time to unwind and spend more time with family and friends. However, it’s important to also keep in mind that opportunist thieves could be right around the corner, ready to take advantage of your relaxed state of mind. So, follow these three simple steps from your friends at A1 Lock and Key and stay safe this summer!

How to Keep Your Home Safe in Summer

1. Upgrade Your Home’s Security

We’re not suggesting that you have to install an expensive security system to keep your home safe this summer, but there are a few easy and inexpensive things you can do. Start by checking out your front door’s deadbolt lock. If you don’t have one or it is worn out and rusty, call a locksmith to install a new, sturdy one instead. Also, get in the habit of using your air conditioner more than your windows to cool your house. While it can be nice to let a fresh breeze in on a milder day, we don’t recommend doing this when you’re not at home, or at night. You’ll sleep better knowing your windows are locked and secure.

2. Don’t Post Vacation Plans on Social Media

We know, it can be very tempting to let the world know how much fun you’re having on vacation. After all, who doesn’t love a cute beach picture on Instagram? However, in order to keep your home safe while you’re away, it’s a much better idea to keep your vacation plans to yourself. It’s not worth the risk of letting potential burglars know that your house is empty for the week. If you really want to post those pictures, turn them to private so only close friends and family can see them or wait until you’re home from your trip to make the posts.

3. Clean Out Your Garage

Cleaning out the garage is not likely to be a homeowner’s idea of a fun afternoon. However, if you don’t have enough room to store your expensive outdoor toys, like bikes or sports gear, it’s time to declutter. It’s never a good idea to leave expensive items outside, even in your backyard. Instead, make sure they all have a home inside your locked garage.
