3 Untrustworthy Locksmith Red Flags

When it comes to the safety and security of your home and family, you can never be too careful. That’s why, when choosing a locksmith to rekey or replace the locks on your home, you need to be sure you’re selecting one you can trust. At A1 Lock and Key LLC, we’d never want you to fall prey to a locksmith scam, so today we’re discussing three major red flags of untrustworthy locksmiths.

1. Lack of Branding

Any reputable business is going to have branded items that point to its company name and information. So, if you contact a locksmith and they don't answer the phone with their company name, they may be using many false business names and phone numbers that feed into a remote call center. Disreputable companies may also show up at your home in an unmarked car which often points to a contracted employee who may be poorly trained and uninsured. As you consider a company, check its website, ask for a business card, and be sure you are working with a truly legitimate operation.

2. Extremely Low Quotes

Another sign of a shady business is one that offers extremely low quotes without even seeing the job in person. They try to lock you into their service with very low prices and then add on another $50-$100 in "labor costs" after the job is done. In contrast, a reputable company will be upfront about all the costs involved in the project and won't tack on extra fees at the end of the job. If you feel a company is being evasive over the phone as you discuss prices, trust your instincts and choose a better business.

3. Bad Customer Reviews

Finally, as you consider a locksmith company, do your research and check their website for reviews. In some cases, you may feel comfortable hiring a business with no reviews or bad reviews, but when it comes to your safety, it's really best to trust the testimonials left by real customers. In addition to their company website, check out other websites like the Better Business Bureau and Yelp where only credible and authorized companies are registered.
