3 Steps to Take After a Break-In

No one wants to think that their home could potentially get broken into. A home invasion is every homeowner’s worst nightmare, and we’d probably all just like to pretend it would never happen. However, even if you take all the necessary steps to ensure your home’s safety, it may still fall victim to burglary, and it is best to be prepared. At A1 Lock and Key LLC, we believe in being prepared. So if your home is ever broken into, follow these three steps.

1. Call the Police

First and foremost, when you experience a break-in, the police must be called. This is especially important if you even remotely suspect that the burglar is still inside your home. While you wait for the police to arrive, resist the urge to touch anything as your home is now a crime scene, and they will need to collect evidence. Also, remember that calling the police is not only important to secure your home, but also to ensure the incident is put on record. Skipping this step may cause problems down the road with your insurance.

2. Call Your Insurance Company

Your insurance company should be notified of the break-in within 24 hours of the incident. They will need to see the police report as well as any supporting documents you may have that will support your claim. This could include manuals or warranties as well as a list of anything stolen or damaged during the break-in. This step can be stressful, so be prepared to take a deep breath and answer all of their questions as accurately as you can.

3. Clean Up and Protect Against Future Break-Ins

Finally, once the police and insurance have everything they need, you will be permitted to clean up and start putting your home back together. Cleaning up the physical damage and working on getting new debit cards, identification cards, etc., should be a good step towards healing from this trauma. Additionally, you will want to make sure this never happens again, so go ahead and improve and refresh your security. Upgrading your locks, adding locks to your windows, and investing in a new security system will help you get your life back to normal as soon as possible.

Our team at A1 Lock and Key sincerely hopes that your home is never broken into. However, if it does happen, you can trust us to help you get your life back to normal. Contact us in Indianapolis today at (317) 775-0332 or request service online.
